The prior approval of the Chief Police Officer is necessary before any member of the rank and file can become eligible to qualify for any of the above allowances, which approval shall be withheld in the case of an application to qualify in respect of a language or dialect con
sidered by the Chief Police Officer to be the applicant's own language or dialect.

Every holder of any of the above allowances may be examined from time to time, on the direction of the
Chief Police Officer, in

and on failure to attain such degree of proficiency as the Chief Police Officer may approve, tile allowance payable to him shall thereupon determine.
