Section 56

Any prison officer who unlawfully, or in breach of his engagement, absents himself from duty under circumstances which show that he has the intention of not returning to his duty shall be deemed to have deserted and is guilty of an offence imprisonment for 12 months, and all arrears of pay due to him shall be forfeited.
