Section 272

The appellant shall within 14 days from the time of such judgment, sentence or order being passed or made, file a petition in the Court of a Magistrate, paying at the same time the prescribed appeal fee.

If the appellant is in custody, he may give notice of appeal within the said 14 days either orally or in writing to the officer in charge of the prison, and on payment of the prescribed appeal fee, the officer shall forthwith forward the notice or the purport thereof to the Court of a

Magistrate.

Every such petition of appeal shall be addressed to the High

Court and shall state shortly the substance of the judgment appealed against and the grounds of appeal, and shall be signed by the appellant except where such notice is given orally as provided in subsection (2).

No fee shall be payable when the appeal is made by a public servant acting in his official capacity.
