ACT
Opening note
This Act may be cited as the Seamen’s Unemployment Indemnity
Act.
Interpretation.
In this Act and in any rules made thereunder unless the context otherwise requires —
“seamen” includes all persons employed on any vessel;
“vessel” means and includes every kind of vessel used in navigation.
Payment of unemployment indemnity.
The owner of a vessel shall be bound to indemnify any seaman employed therein against unemployment resulting from the wreck or loss of such vessel.
The indemnity shall be paid for the days during which such seaman remains in fact unemployed and shall be at the same rate as the wages agreed to be paid to such seaman: provided that the total amount payable shall not exceed 2 months’ wages.
Any money due under this section may be recovered by suit in the appropriate court.
Power to make rules.
His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan in Council may from time to time make rules generally for the carrying out of the purposes of this
Act.
